Hey everyone!

So to say the least, work is extraordinarily busy, but unbelievably fulfilling, plus dat new baby has been keeping me quite occupied as well – so I apologize for being rather MIA with the mixes as of late. Fear not though! I’ve brought a gem of a mix out that I’ve been wanting to do for a while now – think 90’s House Party vibes! It’s all of the stuff that I really loved listening to growing up that really helped to shape my musical tastes when it comes to dj’ing, plus has a lot of the “essentials” that I would always play at college house-parties back in the day. It’s along the same lines as the Hip Hop Classics mix I did a while back, without including anything that wouldn’t be palatable for those who don’t enjoy digging deep into the crates. It’s a bunch of awesome music and I really hope you dig it! Keep on the lookout for a few more mixes coming this way (hopefully) soon-ish (I’m sitting on a downtempo mix that I’m not quite sure is ready for prime-time yet – think Blue Sky Black Death, Thievery Corporation, TYCO, etc), but in the mean-time enjoy this one!

DJ Helix – The 10 Year Mix

Hey everyone, long time no talk – it’s been a minute since I’ve posted anything up, but, you know how that whole “real life” thing goes. Between the new job, buying a house, my laptop breaking, and everything else going on in my life – it’s been pretty hectic – all good though, I’ve got a TREAT for you all. Last Sunday was the 10 year anniversary of me starting to DJ – it’s when I finally got my 2nd turntable (which I still have mind you): a Technics 1210 from Cue Records down on South Street, Philadelphia. Prior to that point I’d been using my parent’s direct drive pioneer turntable with a pitch wheel to listen to the records that I was buying. Since then a LOT has happened – I learned how to dj, I met a TON of amazing people, dj’d at some awesome venues, started my whole music production side thing, made somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 mixes if not more (I still have the large majority of them as well), and have had a blast doing it ever since. From Pedro Grayfox coming over and teaching me how to beatmatch and beatcount in my dorm room, spending ~5 hours that first day, to DJ’ing at Fluid on the same bill as J Majik and The Upbeats, to getting signed to Skynet’s NVision label, to having my own weekly event, to making multiple mixes with over 100,000 downloads – I couldn’t ask for more. I’ve done a lot of mixes in the past, but for this one I wanted to do something special – I wanted to go through all of the different genres of music that I’ve dj’d – showcasing my evolution over the years, and put it all into a single mix. I’ve come up with a pretty solid representation of my musical taste and the evolution of that over the years – going from Drum and Bass to Electro to Moombahton to Oldschool Hip Hop, it covers all of the bases for me. I really hope that you enjoy this mix as I’ve put a lot of thought into the whole thing. Prior to tracklist and mix link though, I’d like to give some thanks to people who’ve made a difference over the years:

New DJ Mix – Day[9] Made Me Do It – The Mix!

Hey everyone,

Been a while since I’ve done some new stuff – but, I’ve been quite busy in the trenches with multiple projects going on at once.

Day9

If some of you know me, you know I’m quite a Starcraft 2 player. While I’m not all that good (High Gold/Low Platinum on US servers, and High Silver/Low Gold on Korean servers), I still try my best to learn from each win or loss. The problem for me coming into SC2 was a complete lack of RTS experience. Now I, like the rest of you, probably played a ton of Red Alert, Starcraft 1, Warcraft 2, Warcraft 3, Red Alert 2, Total Annihilation, etc with “10 mins, no rush!” type games with your brothers/friends. Stepping into SC2 I would just get obliterated since I had absolutely no idea what I was doing – frustrating to say the least. When I was searching around for video tutorials I stumbled upon some youtube archives of the Day[9] Daily. Not only have I learned a LOT from watching one Sean Plott, aka Day[9], about the game of Starcraft 2, but, he’s turned me on to some fantastic music that I didn’t know about before (shocking, I know). One of those groups is Blue Sky Black Death. After hearing “Swords From Driftwood” on his show…I HAD to hear more. Needless to say I’ve become a HUGE fan of theirs after not even knowing about them even just a few months ago. I’ve done a few single artist mixes before – all archived here: DJ Shadow, 2 Teebee mixes, Hybrid, and even 2 All Movin Shadow mixes when I heard the label was disolving. This is the newest “All Artist” mix – all Blue Sky Black Death. I made this mix as my way to say thank you to Day[9] for four things:

Exposing me to so much amazing new music (Ludique, BSBD, Purity Ring, etc)
Teaching me an absurd amount about the game of Starcraft 2
Making me a better gamer
Putting so much effort into the community – his passion and energy are tireless

For all of this, I have to thank him. I’ve made huge strides in my play due to his dailies alone, and I’ve also begun to think about games in a different way – understanding the WHY of what we do in addition to the how and what of what we do.

So this is a little mix I put together over the past week more or less to act as a demo mix to give out to club owners/promoters so that I can start playing out more often. With that in mind, you’ll see where the tracklist is aimed at – getting that ass moving, and moving quickly. A lot different than my other mixes as you can see, but it’s still a great mix none-the-less. It’s mostly rap songs with a few Baltimore club tunes put in there at the end for good measure. So I did this mix yesterday while waiting around before I went out for the afternoon, really just because I had nothing to do, and a whole lot of great tunes that I was listening to all week long – so why not do a mix up with them? If you enjoyed the last mix I did (Indie House Dance Rock mix) then you’ll love this one. Even if you didn’t, you’re still gonna love it as it’s THAT much more gooder. So I’ve been trying to do one of these for a while now as I’m a rabid fan of Oldschool Hip Hop, and that hip hop I grew up listening to back in 90-92 in California. Whenever I dj out doing hip hop I always warm up the crowd with some oldschool and everyone LOVES it because they *never* hear anyone playing it anymore, always going “OH MAN! THIS TUNE!!!!!”.
